    Id say D still works in the song. Just like Db

    • @BecomeABassist
      @BecomeABassist День тому

      D works as a note in the song, since it's part of the key, but the moment he's playing that D, the chord is an Eb7, which uses a Db, which is what Paul intended to be there. If you listen to Paul play this song live, his bass players play a Db over that chord, not a D.

    Growing up as an Elton John fan, whose bassist Dee Murray was a crazy genius, my view is the bass adds depth to a song. I know most people don't know that Elton's original band was a trio (Elton plus Dee Murray on bass/vocals and Nigel Olsson on drums/vocals) but try and remove the bass from songs like Rocket Man or Philadelphia Freedom and the difference is shocking.

    Naked version is even worse. Which is weird because mccartney was 100% behind that project and he somehow chose a worse take than on the album

    • @BecomeABassist
      @BecomeABassist 2 дні тому

      From a bass perspective, I strongly disagree @andrewlloydpeterson. I think the quality of the bass playing on the Naked version is much better. There aren't any of those out of time/out of tune notes and it sounds like John actually knows the song by the time the Naked take is recorded.

    Are you sure about bass directly in the console ? Geoff Emerick said he couldn't imagine to record a bass this way. He said he needed an amplifier. Another point is that I think that Paul has to sing and play bass at the same time on the first LP's. Maybe well from Rubber Soul he could play the bass completly focused on what he did because he didn't have to sing at the same time he was playing. Thank you for this excellent video that made me appreciate again some great songs ! ;-)

      @@BecomeABassist if you were playing a 1 4 5 say G7 C7 D7 and wanted to use multiple modes. What would you suggest trying.

    • @BecomeABassist
      @BecomeABassist 4 дні тому

      If they're all dominant chords like that and you wanted to assign modes to each of them, you'd use their associated Mixolydian scales (G Mixo for the G7, C Mixo for the C7 and D Mixo for the D7). Doing this would help to outline the specific chords since there's not a single scale what would work over all of them. That's why you'd consider using 3 different Mixolydian scales. It's also very context dependent though. Those are all the chords of a basic G blues, and if you wanted to play a fill during a G blues, then the G minor pentatonic or the G blues scale would be a good choice too. It wouldn't outline any of the specific chords, but it'd (probably) sound good.

    Thanks for your common sense approach. I have only been learning to play the bass for a couple of months , but have given up on the one finger per fret exercises. I got fed up of the pain in my wrist and fingers as i tried to contort my left hand into a position it clearly did not want to be in. Now i micro shift , and keep my wrist nice and straight , hey presto no more pain ! I still try to one finger per fret on the D and G strings , but i am giving up on the E and A strings , i dont think that it is worth the pain and long term health risks.

    The idea that John sabotaged any of Paul's songs is laughable. Clearly, John was not on his game that day, nor was he a great bass player. (George was much better.) John hated Paul's "granny music", yet he performed masterfully on both rhythm guitar and lead on Honey Pie. Probably of all of Paul's songs, that would have been the song he would want to sabotage, if he was so inclined. Paul could have easily wiped the tape and rerecorded the bass if he thought John's playing detracted from TLAWR.

    • @BecomeABassist
      @BecomeABassist 18 днів тому

      I agree about John not deliberately sabotaging the song, and also that he wasn't on his game that particular take. The 'Naked' take from 5 days afterwards is much cleaner and John just sounds like he knows the song properly by that point.
